The Hartberg Plant: past its 50-Years-Anniversary

Prolactal GmbH, the former Lactoprot Alpenländische Milchindustrie und Handels GmbH, was founded in 1986, and has its headquarters in Linz in Upper Austria. Part of the Artax Group since 1998, Prolactal has access to the know-how of its international affiliated companies, allowing it to benefit from synergy effects. Today, Prolactal counts approximately 60 employees, working at the Hartberg production plant and in the Vienna sales office, generating an annual turnover of 30 million euros (2011 plan).

The Hartberg plant, located in the region of Styria, has a long tradition. Its roots go back as far as 1929, when the dairy co-operative "Wechselgau" was founded. In 1957, the co-operative purchased land in Hartberg, located right next to today's Hartberg railway station. The site started operation after its foundation in 1958. The main function of the drying plant was to process excess milk. In the 1970s, production was expanded to cater to the food production sector. Austria's accession to the European Union and the consequential expiry of the Austrian Market Regulation Act made excess milk processing unprofitable. In 1996, the Hartberg plant was purchased by Lactoprot and has, in the meantime, been transformed into a competitive player in the international arena with the use of new technologies and the creation of new product lines.

In 2010, Prolactal's plant in Wörgl (Tyrol) and the laboratory in Pasching (Upper Austria) were separated from Prolactal, and contributed into other Artax companies.

Besides conventional products, organic products play an important role at the Hartberg site: Prolactal is a certified member of the "Ernte für das Leben" association of organic food producers.

Lactoprot Austria's evolution from an excess milk processing facility to a specialist producer of individually-adapted milk products and derivatives with worldwide operations was reflected in the renaming of the company, when Lactoprot was renamed Prolactal in May 2008. This is a result of the strategic reorientation of the Artax Group, which saw the further narrowing of Prolactal's focus on the development, production and worldwide sale of blends and special products with functional characteristics, such as lactose-reduced and partly demineralised products.
